AED AT THE REC

What is an AED?
The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device. An AED can check a person’s heart rhythm. It can recognize a rhythm that requires a shock. And it can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. Thanks go to KATHY BOVA LANG for all her work in acquiring an AED for the Hurley Rec.  Thanks Kathy!

*TENNIS EVENTS*

Ready for some additional tennis fun???

Soon our 2009 Hurley Rec tennis season will be underway. For Special Tennis Events this year, we are going with a "Social Seconds" theme, to hopefully make it easy for everyone to incorporate these events into your summer schedule.

- ROUND ROBINS: The second Saturday in June, July, and August, that is June 13, July 11, and August 8, we'll plan for our Round Robins at 9:00 a.m. Bring yourself and anyone else that wants to have a fun tennis morning, and we'll set up doubles-matches and rotate players based on who is there. If you want to bring some breakfast food or juice to share, that's great as well.

ANNUAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT: The second Saturday in September, that is September 12, we'll plan for our Fifth Annual Hurley Rec Tennis Tournament at 8:30 a.m., rain date September 13. We'll get more information out about that, cost, registration, etc., as we get closer.

END OF TENNIS SEASON PARTY: The second Friday in October, that is October 9, we'll plan for our annual pizza party. We'll get more information out about that as we get closer also.

If people have issues with any of these dates, please call Laura Ricci at 679-3008 or “lauraricci@hvc.rr.com”. Our goal is to select a date which can accommodate the majority of the tennis players.

Please also call or email me if you would like Hurley Rec Tennis polo shirts, tee shirts, caps, or visors this year. If there is enough interest, I will get choices, prices, etc., to get us well attired as early in the season as possible.

See you all on the courts!!!  Laura Ricci, Tennis -Social Events Chairperson

Snack Bar Updates

This year the snack bar is operating under the management of our volunteers Rick Baker and Rick Naccarato. Be sure to let them know about your ideas.

The Hurley Recreation Association, or the "Rec" is celebrating its 40th year of operation this summer.  Many thanks go out to the founding members of the Rec, who, in 1969, went door to door to encourage their neighbors to join them in forming this family oriented facility that would provide opportunities to swim, play tennis and socialize. To this day, the Rec has consistently achieved its mission to maintain a topnotch summer program through the combined skills of a professional staff and the volunteer spirit of its members. This commitment to working together has helped to keep the membership dues at very reasonable rates. To do this, each member is required to assist in the operation or maintenance of the Rec by completing “work hours”. It is through the generous donations of each member’s time that the Rec continues to be successful!   Keep Up the Good Work!

……………………………………………………………….

2009 Summer Season - Hours of Operation

The Rec will be open weekends only from 12 pm – 4 pm starting on June 13, 2009 until the end of the Kingston School District’s school year. Thereafter, the club is open daily for open swim for all members until Labor Day from 12:00 pm to 8 pm, weather permitting. Mornings are reserved for swim team and swim lessons and occasionally, a Saturday morning or Wednesday afternoon swim meet. Additionally, this summer the Rec is offering an Adult Fitness Program to all adult members which shall include an opportunity for daily lap swimming for one hour beginning at 6:30 am and evening walk/run opportunities. Check out the website for more details.

The tennis courts may be reserved from 8 am to 9 pm on any day of the week starting as soon as the nets are up in the spring, which is usually before Mother’s Day. Please note the standing reservations for use by the Adult Tennis League, which generally uses both courts on the mid- week evenings (Tues, Wed and Thurs) from 6 pm to 9 pm and weekend mornings from 8 am to 11 am, and use during the children’s tennis lessons.

The Park and its Facilities:

The heart of the Rec is a four-lane 25-yard pool with diving area and children’s area. There is also a Wading pool for toddlers * Dressing rooms with showers * Two hard surface tennis courts with windscreens * Umbrella tables with chairs * Chaise lounges * Concession Stand * Covered pavilions with picnic tables and barbeque grills * Basketball court * Playground area * Hiking Trails * Ice Skating Rink.

The baseball field is generally available for use by members when its not being used by the Hurley Little League.  The Hurley Rec is happy to support the Hurley Little League by providing our field to the Little League for their practices, regularly scheduled games and its all-star season.

The Ice Rink is available in the winter for use by members during the months of January, February and March, weather permitting. Check the Rec’s website for more information.  Many thanks to Ryan Valdez, Brian Fuoco, Kevin Flood and their team of volunteers for great work this past winter.

The pavilions are available for use by members only for private parties with a deposit of $50.00.  For reservations, please obtain a form from the park director.

Social Activities

Several social activities take place during the summer and winter seasons. In the summer, the Rec will continue to host its traditional Opening Day Party on June 13, 2009, and a closing day party near the end of August.  Additionally, there will be numerous events for all ages such as crafts and movie nights for children, dance parties for young adults and teens, and several adult get-togethers – after all, everyone can use a night out every once in a while – right?

Special Fundraising Event - This year the Rec is also sponsoring a Special Event for Adults which shall include cocktails, a buffet and a silent auction to help raise funds for various improvements at the Rec - such as the establishment of a pool improvement fund. Every member is encouraged to attend this fundraiser to show your support of the tremendous efforts being made by your fellow volunteer-members to improve our park, pool, ice rink and swim team - and if you want to do more to help organize this event, please sign up with Lisa Faxon, the Rec’s work hour coordinator, at the Registration Days.

A full calendar of social events shall be posted on the bulletin board at the pool and posted on the Rec’s web site – www.hurleyrec.com.

Hurley Rec. is ON-LINE:  The Hurley Rec’s website is updated thanks to the efforts of Michelle Fuoco, the Communication and Website Director. Great efforts shall be made this year to improve communications through use of emails and posting information on the website. Please be sure your email address is correct or notify Laura Piccoli, Membership Director, of your preference to receive notices by phone or mail.

 Adult Tennis League

You may ask “why play tennis?” No doubt you’ve swatted a tennis ball around sometime in you life. Granted, you may not have had the form of a US Open winner, but remember what a blast it was?  Along with reclaiming that fast-paced, kid-like excitement (bye-bye boring treadmill workouts), you’ll reap plenty of grown-up rewards. For starters, tennis is played with other people, giving you the chance to hang out with friends or make new ones. Speaking of bodies, this sport provides a total workout. Tennis also builds coordination, boosts bone density, and since it requires tactical thought, gives your mind a workout, too.  So, tennis is good for anybody who likes social, goal-oriented sports and appreciates a little friendly competition. So…

All adult members- all levels of skill - are welcome to join the Rec’s tennis league. If you are interested, matches are scheduled beginning the week after Mother’s Day until Columbus Day.  All you have to do is indicate which dates you can play on the session’s available form or call Mickey Edwards, the Rec’s Adult Tennis Coordinator, at 679-3416, for more info.

Adult Fitness Program

This summer, a pilot program is being offered for Adults to provide our adult members with more opportunities to improve their physical fitness and health. This will begin with morning lap swimming, walking or jogging partnerships during swim lessons/swim team practice, maybe yoga or other fitness activities. The early morning adult fitness swim hour will be held between 6:30 and 7:30.  Additionally. plans are in the works to provide Trails or measured loops for walking/running.  Volunteers interested in helping to shape this program are encouraged to contact Lisa Faxon, the Work Hours Coordinator, to sign up. This is a great way to invest your work hour time in improving the activities for our adult members at the Rec – including you!

Children’s Drop-In Activity Program.  Great News!  After receiving positive feedback from the Members, plans are underway to expand the REC RATS activity program to a day-long activity based “drop-in” structure. This summer a pilot program will be offered to members whose children have completed 2nd Grade or older for a full day of supervised activities at the Rec. The program will allow parents to “drop off” their children who are pre-registered from Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm.  Members who are interested are encouraged to register their children early since space will be limited. The cost will be $25.00 a day and offered on a weekly basis until mid-August.  There will be staff on hand to greet the children when they arrive, sign them in and out at the end of the day.  Organized activities will take place throughout the day to include games, arts & crafts, swimming, tennis, basketball, play time on the playground, lunch and snack time.  The check in location will be at the lower pavilion.  Sign ups will begin on April 25th and April 29th at the Work Hours sign up sessions and then June 13th.  There must be a minimum of 10 children for each week.  If we do not have the minimum number of participants for a particular week, the program will not be offered for that week and members will be notified as soon as possible.  We’d like to have everything in place prior to the pool opening so, if you are interested, please sign up early.  If children are participating in the drop-in program, they may also be signed up for swim/tennis lessons. Staff will be responsible for getting the children to their lessons each day.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jackie DeCicco @ 339-8842.

Children’s Arts and Crafts

ARTS AND CRAFTS WILL CONTINUE TO BE OFFERED THIS SUMMER EVERY TUESDAY AND THURSDAY FOR CHILDREN – 1 pm.

Please be sure to consider hosting an Arts and Crafts event as a way for you to fulfill your “work hours” commitment.  Investing your time to improve the activities at the Rec is a wonderful way to participate in the Rec! Sign up at Registration April 25th and 29th.
